GEM at Claremont Colleges

GEM (Global Empowerment Mindset) at Claremont Colleges is centered around the concept of personal empowerment.

The program is designed to equip students with valuable, empowering life skills for high achievement in their personal life and to unleash students’ potential. It is implemented at Claremont Colleges (Claremont, CA), which provides students a release from their accustomed cultural context. From stepping out of their comfort zone and immersing themselves in the American context, students inevitably establish dynamic interactions with the global context available to them. This is vital in developing an empowered mindset.

GEM sessions form a highly interactive environment by incorporating inquiry-based learning, discussion-based learning, and active learning strategies. Though all GEM lessons are conducted entirely in English as part of the immersive experience, we understand students come with varying levels of proficiency; for this reason, our instructors are careful to provide instructional scaffolding to enable students to take initiative. The English language will come to life in the students’ eyes as they are continuously engaged, motivated, challenged, enjoy themselves, and come to the realization that communication is key, not grammar usage.

The GEM sessions achieve this with its utilization of group leaders in leading discussions and session activities such as: brainstorming, projects, presentations, and speeches. Group leaders, typically university students, hold the role of mentors and become a source of inspiration. They guide students to delve deeper in their thought process, provide more individualized attention to students, ensure all students understand the lessons as well as find ways to express themselves, and much more.

GEM at Claremont Colleges is different from standard GEM Programs. GEM at Claremont Colleges is developed and operated in collaboration with the Drucker Institute, a social enterprise that is a part of Claremont Graduate University. The program contains three Drucker for Future Leaders (DFL) sessions that is run by the Drucker Institute. DFL teaches management and leadership skills based on the teachings of Peter F. Drucker. The students use these lessons to design self-management plans to effectively pursue their academic and personal goals. They then apply the same insights to community service projects.

Activities, including but not limited to visits to non-profit organization, international companies, and interaction with local high school students are organized to complement the curriculum for the purpose of reinforcing established GEM and DFL concepts, a more interactive student-centered learning, and further adding richness to their program experience. Some activities outside of the GEM classroom sessions may be led in different languages by request and availability as a way to maximize the understanding and impact of a particular activity.

The Active ESL program utilizes active learning strategies to increase language communication and listening skills in an engaging and rewarding manner. Program instructors are mindful of the diverse language abilities of students and are effective in enabling students to take initiative. Instructors also have the support of qualified university students, who take on the mentoring role of group leader, to ensure more individualized attention for each student.
